Types of Window Glass Explained

Float, toughened, laminated, low-E… glass comes in more types than most people realise. Here's what each one does.
Everyday glass
Standard window glass is 'float' glass — the basic clear glass used in most windows. On its own it breaks into sharp shards, which is why building rules require stronger 'safety glass' in certain locations like doors and low-level windows.
Float glass is fine for most ordinary windows above waist height where impact and safety are not a concern.
Safety glass: toughened and laminated
Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated to be much stronger, and shatters into small blunt pieces if broken — ideal for doors, shower screens and splashbacks. Laminated glass bonds two panes with a tough interlayer so it holds together when struck, making it the best choice for security and overhead glazing.
Both count as safety glass and satisfy Building Regulations in 'critical locations'.
Performance and privacy glass
Low-emissivity (low-E) glass has an invisible coating that keeps heat in, improving energy efficiency — it is standard in modern double glazing. Obscure or patterned glass provides privacy while letting light through, perfect for bathrooms and front doors. Acoustic glass reduces noise near busy roads.
